FAQ

We've put together this Frequently Asked Questions section to provide helpful information for you. Please feel free to submit additional questions for this section.

1. How does Upside Downtown affect the Downtown Everett Action Committee and other downtown groups?

Upside Downtown will help these groups reach their goals, by providing a necessary resource where these groups can find help with their communications and marketing goals. As many of you know, for the past several years, I've served as the volunteer Public Relations/Communications director for the Downtown Everett Action Committee. I've worked to take notes at the meetings, send out meeting notices and to coordinate events for downtown and the committee such as the Quarterly Update luncheons we host with the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce, the Hewitt Streetscape opening, the Horse & Carriage rides last Christmas, and more. Through this work, I have been out in the community, meeting people and learning the challenges faced by downtown's here and abroad. I have been truly privileged to work with so many great people and my passion for downtown has led me on a quest to create services and programs that are dedicated to downtown such as the Sparks newsletter to inform downtown and beyond about downtown events, news and more. I've wanted to find a way that I could better assist these groups, as well as the many non-profits that have approached me to help with their public relations and communications needs. Upside Downtown will help me and others assist these groups to grow and prosper, thereby creating an even more vibrant downtown Everett.

2. How does Upside Downtown impact the work you started to bring the three main downtown groups together, DEAC, DEA, and Open Space?

Upside Downtown will only help these efforts, not detract from them. After meeting with Lanie McMullin in November, where we both had the same idea (an idea that has surfaced at the DEAC committee meetings and in the Mayor's office for quite some time), I brought the idea of consolidating the three main groups to the DEAC meeting in January, and then worked behind the scenes, talking with the folks on the Open Space group and DEA, to negotiate and help facilitate an alliance. I researched various avenues for working together and submitted a report to the group in February, and we created a subtask force to work out details. In April, the DEAC group adopted a resolution that outlines the subtask force's recommendations for creating a downtown neighborhood, through which the three groups could work together. We are now working with the DEA and Open Space to receive their responses to this resolution.

3. How will Upside Downtown achieve its goals?

Upside Downtown will follow a well-developed business plan that uses a systems-approach to outline goals and objectives, timelines and more. We have created a strong board of advisors that provides strategic advantages, along with a sales strategy and other plans. We use the system developed by the premier provider of business development, E-myth Worldwide to create the necessary systems to run and grow our business. We have successfully completed the E-myth Worldwide Quick-Start mastery program and continue our education along those lines.

4. Who is involved in Upside Downtown?

We hope you will become involved today. Upside Downtown is currently a program of Upside Down, which is owned and operated by Leita Hermanson, an award-winning writer and marketer, who has twelve years experience owning and operating a small business and twenty years experience in marketing and communications.

5. What is the structure of Upside Downtown?

Currently, Upside Downtown is a program provided by Upside Down.

6. How can I get involved or help?

There are many ways you can become involved. You can become a member, volunteer, or partner. First, become a member. It's only $99 and for that price, it's a can't-be-missed-opportunity. As a member, you'll be able to participate in a number of ways depending on your business and goals. You can partner with us to create the marketing programs and tools to gain exposure for your business, while helping other downtown businesses at the same time. For example, if you are a business that has media opportunities, we need you. And, it will benefit you. We act as an agency for downtown, and you'll gain access to our downtown businesses, as we create joint advertising programs. If you are another service provider, such as a printer, you can partner with us to rollout downtown marketing tools such as brochures, flyers, posters and more. Our goal is to have every single downtown business as a member so that we can work together, so that we can achieve the clout, buying power and economies of scale that larger businesses enjoy. Our concept is to think of downtown as a collective portfolio of businesses that are all a part of our program, much the way mall stores or outlet stores are part of the development company's plans and programs at say Northbend Outlet stores which is owned by Chelsea Properties. Mall stores gain the collective power of the entire mall, which often has anchor tenants to draw people in.

7. What experience and qualifications do you have?

In addition to our work on the DEAC committee, Leita has served in a number of capacities in our community from working on the Arts Council board, the Fresh Paint Arts Festival committee, the Fourth of July committee, and she created a guide to downtown restaurants for the Superior Court of Washington, Snohomish County. Hermanson brought the Horse & Carriage rides to Everett for the first time in the city's history last Christmas and organized the Hewitt Streetscape grand opening event, as well as worked behind the scenes for the USS Abraham Lincoln Homecoming helping to link downtown businesses with the city so they could participate in this historic event.
