Before the Petunias. Our city's gateway.

Above is the main entryway into our city, our Gateway,
as you enter from Highway 97, officially called SR285, prior to crossing the Wenatchee River.

I fell in love with Petunias when a tenacious group of purple petunias planted themselves in a flower container
in my carport, and in my gravel driveway. Without any help from me, no water or extra soil, the petunias took off and created
a beautiful work of art. I'd like to transform the grassy area leading into our city, which has been left unmaintained. It's
the major gateway, a place that greets visitors each and every day.
Can You Spot the Petunias? Beautiful Wave Petunias are showing up in unusal places! Watch for the mystery
wave. Help us transform our city's gateway! Operation Petunia: Phase I. 2 hours. 1 really nice blister. Priceless.

Humble start. After picking up garbage, weeding and pulling dead grass, I planted Petunias in a small area near the
Gateway. Now imagine this whole area bright with Petunias. All it takes is for each person to provide just one Petunia plant,
and we can transform this area, and the entire area behind the barrier, too. It's called the Multiplier Effect. So let's give
it a try.

Just a start. My philosophy...start with what you have and with what you can do. Don't talk yourself out of doing something
just because you lack money or resources. Set a goal. Make a plan. Then go out and do it. With your help, these beautiful
Petunias will multiply, and, we'll add beautiful xeriscape plants to transform this entire entryway into our city.

I arrived at the site early Saturday morning, eager to begin planting.

I had planned to have a weed eater, but didn't have one available. I wanted to plant anyway. I thought the dead grass
would be easy to pull or remove with my old fashioned implement. Not so.
Removing the weeds and dried grass proved to be much more difficult than I had planned. That's ok. This
was an experiment, so I learned some good things for next time.

My Subaru is loaded up with tools, water, gloves and Petunias.
